Industry Research and Comment

  • According to Nielsen Entertainment's third annual Active Gamer Benchmark Study:

Of the roughly 117 million "active gamers" in the U.S. in 2006, more than half (56%) play games online, and 64% of all online gamers are women. Moreover, while teenagers still constitute the largest percentage (40%) of active gamers, more than 15 million of those gamers (almost 8%) are 45 years old or older.
  • A recent study by Forrester Research concluded that the most successful way of reaching teenagers is by means of in-game ad placement or brand specific “advergames”.
  • According to Parks Associates, one third of all adult Internet users in the USA play online games every week. Online gaming has emerged as the most popular web-based entertainment activity – beating online video, music and social networking. The study found that frequent casual gaming grew by 79% year on year.

The above study placed the value of the online casual gaming industry at $400-$500 million for 2007 - with a significant percentage of this revenue coming from advertising.
